Ultra Music Fest 2012

Just watching the Ultra Music Fest and Armin Van Buuren is playing. Just wondering if the entire set is prerecorded since the visuals are perfectly synced with the music. He seems like he is not even touching the CDJs just playing with the mixer's effects. I wouldn't be surprised given the scale of the event but it undermines the idea of being a DJ. The funny thing is that the music reminds me of the stuff played 10 years ago but this seems to me different. Its a synthetic experience, and the crowd thinks its real or doesn't really care.

I guess I'm glad that was able to see some of these DJs when they were DJs.

PS - Since when was Will.I.Am a legit EDM DJ? LOL

Paris Hilton is a dj/producer now. Need ANYONE say more?

Estacy 03-26-2012 02:31 AM

the mayor DJ scene is shifting from the DJ as the guy/girl that controls the crowd to someone that dances along to prerecorded sets so the fireworks sync up. nearly all the really big names do it

electricplums 03-27-2012 09:20 AM

This sort of thing does my head in!

I posted this link on our site last year, Steve Angello not appearing to do much in return for his large paycheck at Dance Valley.

Dont watch it all as it will be 13 minutes of your life that you will never reclaim!

But its fair to say that personally it really f#@cked me off! There a distinct lack of headphone use, though the some half-hearted hands in the air action coupled with ‘the knob’….turning well…err a few knobs here and there, certainly worth the huge booking fee he no doubt picked up!

Reading on some forums Angello defends himself by saying he has been djing without headphones for 2 years and know his tunes that well he doesnt need them??!!!?

Balaroue 03-27-2012 11:56 AM

Well, whatever he's doing, it's a step up from David Guetta... who doesn't even have the equipment turned on...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjVecHSL4Rg

There's a bunch of Guetta vid's like this up, and after hearing him actually mix, I understand why.

Estacy 03-27-2012 06:20 PM

oh god not that video again. If you look closely you can see that the cd player IS in fact on, the cue/play buttons show this, so does the vinyl mode button which is blue when turned on. So the equip. is on, its just the light that makes it difficult to see the jogwheel screen

TBH this wouldnt be too difficult when you only play about 20 songs and they are all pre sync'd to 125 bpm

Estacy 03-28-2012 11:33 AM

true, even if the tracks aren't pre synced, with recordbox the CDJ's show the BPM upto a decimal, more than enough for mixing.

George Stavropo 03-29-2012 03:36 PM

Hi Guys

Having done many a big show with AVB, he is someone I wouldn't be questioning. His production crew come and set up their own midi sync system to lock in the visuals they project throughout his set.

He is one guy who can and still mixes.

Can't say the same about some of the others.

Speak soon
George

thats the reason, that real music enthusiast prefer to watch / look / go to see other Dj´s. Is just fashion and posers today, I compare a lot the videos of Awakenings Festival, on those all djs are playing live, mistakes, skips, etc, thats the cool thing

:p

NathanShort 04-02-2012 12:55 PM

Armin sends data out of a DVJ sometimes, and other times he is just on skype telling his video and lighting guy what is coming up next, they are a tight crew and have no problem syncing like any good DJ group would, they know each others work in and out.

I say this from experience as I have done FOH and production managed 6 AVB shows in the last 5 years

in2house 04-02-2012 11:54 PM

Thanks for sharing that info.

The reason I posted initial was after seeing this a while back...

You can see why I was questioning. I would love to be behind the scenes on a show like that. Might pickup a few tips for my next neighbourhood party... :D

A bit of topic, but still goes under the same umbrella I think... What's up with this???

Estacy 04-03-2012 11:25 AM

the first ony is actually not that bad. I don't know how he came up with the name though... Tekno euro mixx? sounds like some kind of eurotrance 90s stuff. instead its a disco/deep housish mix....

Yeah, I know, I can't decide if I believe it's him or if he's just taking a piss... Still though, I think it's sad that someone decide to jump on the wagon each time something gets hip again...

R_Dub 04-03-2012 03:04 PM

i'm sorry but that steve angello video is disgusting!
god i'm glad i wasn't there, if thats what DJing has
become then i'll just shoot myself now! :(

Balaroue 04-04-2012 01:57 PM

Many, if not most, of the "producer" guys perform to a pre-recorded set. Most of the actual DJ's (Cox, Tenaglia & the like) actually spin.

I'll never understand why people want to watch a edm dj work in the 1st place. I mean I get watching the turntablist guys work, many are very entertaining... but a house dj?

in2house 04-05-2012 12:37 AM

For myself, I really do want to see what the DJ is doing because I appreciate the craft. No one ever taught me directly how to mix music, I learned by watching others play and then tried it for myself. I'm huge fan of Louie Vega both as a producer and a DJ. At one show, I watched his entire set from the side of the booth. This may sound cliche but I felt that I was literally watching a master at work.

I agree that some DJs are boring to watch but its also in the programming that generates interest as well. As technically profficient turntablists are, I can only take so much cutting and scratching. Some guys get so wrapped up in it that they forget to actually play music.

R_Dub 04-05-2012 01:08 PM

turntablists are fun to watch, for about 5 minutes.
then i need some music!

R_Dub 04-05-2012 01:10 PM

watching a master house dj work can actually be good.
i have had the pleasure of opening up for Ron Trent a couple
of times and i def checked out his mixing techniques. he's a master
of manipulating the system to get the max from it. it's all about
the isolator!

Thought I'd revive this thread after watching this. George mentioned this midi sync system and here it is in action.
