Whats going on in NYC....

....this coming weekend 7/20/07 - 7/22/07? I'm going to be in the city this weekend, and would like to hear some good house music. Last time I did Love and Cielo and heard Joe C and FK. I checked the calendar for those venues, but don't recognize any of the names for the dates we will be there. Louie Vega plays love the following weekend, and Junior is at Cielo the night we leave to go home. Anybody have any suggestions?

Your timing was unintentionally perfect; the weather's good with the best parties in town the following:

Saturday:

-Saturday, PS1 be there 2-3 pm, followed by after-party about 7 minutes walk away at Water Taxi Beach, with Turntables on the Hudson house DJs.

-Check out the basement art if you have time..

Take the E train to 23rd & Ely a couple of stops outside of Manhattan, near the Citibank building in long island city. Or the G or 7:

ps1 warm up is nice. good recommendation.

water taxi beach also is a nice location for an afterparty, great view on manhatten. just the soundsystem was low end last year (plastic speakers).

Fort Greene is just as strong, on Sunday. Both quintessential NY musical experiences along with Coney Island, especially the DJs this weekend. Both with good systems, especially Fort Greene. The after-party's system isn't that important to the whole thing, i never go there worrying about it.

These two parties are the best this weekend. If you have anything left you can get over to Shelter Sat. night or 7-8 AM Sunday morning.

Is Shelter still off of Varick st in Tribeca, or has it moved? Been a while since I've been there.

I'm going to miss Danny Krivit too because our flight is at 5:30 on Sunday.

As a whole... the New York club and party scene is not doing so well.

Except some of the parties mentioned above and a few others, most venues cater to much different crowds. If you walk around, you'll see lots of "bottle service" spots, which usually cater to a bridge & tunnel crowd. You will also see a lot of places that cater to an NYU type students with a heavy "bar" feel. Music at most NYC nightspots are more a miss than hit... so choose wisely.

Even NYC commercial radio such as WKTU 103.5FM has stopped broadcasting its "dance party" mixes on saturday nights. I often found myself listening to David Morales or someone else before heading out to the club.

It is what it is.

You're welcome dude; kinda unfortunate that when someone helps someone else there's not even acknowledgement.

Can't believe you made a 5:30 reservation; if you're visiting the idea is to stretch out the vist and get full days in. Catch up on sleep later. Can always see about getting on standby on a later flight, often not a problem to do that.I stayed in Hawaii almost another week, changing my time of departure drastically by doing that.

Clubs are not where you wanna be in NY anymore, unless it's winter. 718 sessions and Krevit are only in the ok category, but get more promo because there's not much else.

Shelter is in the same approx. area of Tribeca it was a dozen years ago, after relocating to a new location a couple of years ago. Check their website or call information.

In my experience, as soon as you say thanks, the thread dies. I was going to wait to see if anyone else had any other suggestions before I "killed it".

But in all sincerity, thank you for the suggestions. I will most likely check out PS1.

Cool, PS1 is the shit. If you're here Friday night, outdoors at either South St. Seaport Pier 17 for DJs until 4 AM, or Cooper-Hewitt 90th & 5th, 6-9 pm.

If you really have to leave at 5:30 you can still make the first couple of hours of either Fort Greene or hang out in Central Park all day until then, getting the first couple of hours of Central Park Skaters and house/classics. That's followed by a deep house after-party beside it, that starts at 6:45 pm. They're in the middle of the park near the bandshell, enter at 72nd street from either side.

And like i said if you go to PS1 and the nearby Water-Taxi after-party with Turntables on the Hudson DJs, it might be enough. You can always do the second shift at Shelter, which starts around 6-8 AM Sunday.

How long a flight? That's too bad because Sunday at Fort Greene's hot. Call in sick or get there late. Here are some of my videos from last Sunday. PS1 will be house this one weekend only.

Damn, the Fort Greene party does look like a good time. Happy people gettin down!

The flight is a short one - about an hour back to NC. The problem is what to do with the luggage until we are ready to go. I guess we could just take them with us since it is in a park and not a club. I just don't want to have to keep an eye on the bags the whole time.

We'll figure something out though since we have a few more options that we didn't know about. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Shouldn't be a problem asking them to hold your luggage, possibly for a few dollars. Or put it in a locker i think they have them at port authority and penn station, and/or they have places you can check in luggage.

This is one of the best weekends here of the year musically. My own experience, if i'm travelin all the way somewhere leavin halfway thru the day wouldn't cut it. Myself i'd make a reservation on a later flight from the same airline 11PM-1AM knowing it won't be fully booked. Then miss the other flight. That's what i would do, some wouldn't. Catch up on sleep later.

I agree 100% The system sounds cool @ low or half way up but when they pump it up watch your ears big time.

Part of why i've never loved Shelter, dating back to the first few weeks after it's opening in the early 90s. Highs are piercing AND they usually play TOO LOUD. Fort Greene's system is just about perfect.

depends on who's in the booth. if the system is played relaxed you can cope with it, but when timmy turns it up your ears start ringing. but i like the atmosphere of the club. it's basic, and you can be shure everybody is there for the music and nothing else.

can anyone ID this track?

Well when you say depends who's in the booth Timmy calls the shots and exercises a lot of control over who plays. It's basically him and Sting most of the time.

That system's never been right at Hubert, 39th St., etc. even with the changes in equipment.

I can't play it loud enough to really hear it here at work, but it sounds like a Playboy track.....In Da Jungle perhaps?

I like the room on Hubert st. At the new room Sting plays with a lil more control of the hi end. so its cool on his night's. There system never cut it for me since the move to 39th st. But to me Shelter is still in the top 3 of the best underground dance parties in NYC

Unfortunately, it's one of the top parties by default. There's nothing great right now, the outdoor parties blow them away IMO.

Shelter tried but never came close to the garage vibe the way Sound Factory did in the early 90s - the sound, the crowd, the music. I would also choose the Warehouse parties a few years ago in the Bronx over the Shelter.

I hear that "Kiss My Black Ass" the party@Webster hall is turning out to be a nice Sound Factory type vibe.
