Which Rane?

Is there any difference between the "a" and the "s" version of the MP,XP 2016?

"A" has an external power supply. "S" has an internal power supply.

No other difference.

Thanks, now I need to find someone to sell me one. I want to get one brand new so I've no choice but to get one from the U.S.
I'm afraid the customs charges will cripple me, aaarrgghhh!!

Jabas,
If I was you, I would consider the original 2016, the one before the "a" or "s".

Sound-wise, they all sound the same. The only difference would be that the original was designed to clip a little earlier on the gain knob, usually between 6 and 8. The "a" and "s" clip on the gain knob around 8 to 10. This led many users to believe that the "a" and "s" sound better than the original. This is not the case. I spoke with Rane's technical support and they confirmed that the reason for the redesigned gain was because most DJs are dumb asses who push the the signal into the red. It is harder to push the "a" and "s" into the red.

I bought a brand new "a", still in the box. It sounded great, but the blue velvet knobs on it were too loose for my taste. Also, I prefer the six position cue selector knob rather than the push button style cue-ing, but that's just me. So, I sold my brand new 2016a and bought a used, original MP2016.

You won't find an original brand new, but nice ones appear every now and then on eBay.

Warning: these mixers are not "warm". They are unforgiving and transparent. If your track lacks bass when played through a MP2016 (original, "a" or "s"), then your track was recorded with low bass, the mixer is not at fault.

From a conversation I had a few years ago with an engineer at Rane, the "A" version (and the current "S" version) has better pre-amps. The phono pre-amps are the same.

Also,

The gain structure starts with the channel gain knob with the sig/ol indicators. It's here that you adjust to below clip, indicated by the lights going from green to red. This gain knob is also used to match levels across the other channels. The mix level knobs across the bottom each function as one side of a crossfader and should be at maximum when the mix into that channel is completed. This allows the channels to present at unity gain their signals to the master section and output drive amps.

These are the major differences what i can see from a quick look at the schematics:

Changed from original:

- Gain changed in a lot of places.
- New PSU. OP single decoupling caps changed to double.
- Better/New RF filters on inputs and outputs.
