M-Audio Firewire cut out problems - HELP!

Wondering if any one who owns the above mentioned soundcard & has had or ever experienced such a fault/problem.

My set up at home is :-

Apple Powerbook 12" G4 / OSX 10.4 / 1GHz CPU / 512mb RAM

M-Audio Firewire Audiophile sound card

Alesis Power Amp

Now, the problem i have recently been experiencing is a total or staggering loss of sound from the sound card. (ie. all 5 lights on the front of the card flash at the same time or the S/PDIF loses connection) resulting in zero sound.

I've looked into what it may be, one it could be i've been hot-wiring the sound card (connecting/deconnecting whilst the computer is on) or that i need more RAM on the Powerbook.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to prevent the above happening again?

thanks in advance.
