My advice to you is to look for a better hosting service. Some companys today offer a free backup every 24 hours and you can restore with a few clicks. And it is not expensive. Message me if you need a need a good name in the business.
Sorry but that's not what happened at all. We maintain backups for the site, it's never a problem to do this. The host is actually excellent, and were on top of the situation in no time at all.
These hackers managed to infiltrate a directory and gained enough privileges to install their own software and run a server on it. They don't care about this web site, they were just using the space and bandwidth for other things of their own. So the host had no choice but to shut off access to the compromised area in a way that only we could control. (hence the error message)
I just waited long enough that they probably won't try again. This is the 'low-hanging fruit' theory. There are plenty enough of other web sites that have similar vulnerabilities that they probably won't bother with this until we hopefully manage to do the needed upgrade to the forum's code so that the same vulnerability cannot be exploited again.
For obvious reasons, I am not going into too much details about any of this....
Again, if it happens again, sorry everyone but there's not much we are going to be able to do until the upgrade takes place.
Speaking of which, have to catch a flight.
