Regarded as one of Brazil's greatest vocal talents in the late 90's, Barbara Mendes was raised in Rio de Janeiro, the general headquarters of Brazilian Popular Music. She started her career at the age of 6, recording jingles and performing at festivals with her mother, singer Marisa Rossi. Her singing was interrupted when she went to Law School, graduating in January 1996.
In August , she moved to New York City in order to develop her singing skills, going to The New School for Social Research. She also experienced Gospel techniques and nowadays has Pat Holley as her vocal coach and teacher.

In August, Barbara was the only Brazilian singer invited to perform at the Ocean Blue Jazz Festival (ex-Mount Fuji), in Japan.
Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Tito Puente, Kenny Burrel and Milt Jackson were also on the program.
In May she made the finals of the most important vocal contest in Brazil - Primio Visa, among 1300 other singers from all over the country, getting
great reviews from the biggest Brazilian newspaper's music critics:

In June recorded the Soundtrack of the movie BOSSA NOVA, directed by Oscar Nominee Bruno Barreto and scored by the Grammy Award Winner, producer, arranger and composer Eumir Deodato. The Soundtrack was released by Verve in 2000.

Recorded and co-wrote the track "Awakening" with Francois K. also arranged by Eumir Deodato. The record was released worldwide on the album Bossa Tres Jazz / Bossa Mundo. Tour in Europe.
In Brazil performed at the Free Jazz Festival with the drummer Guto Goffi.
